Fall Landscaping Tips To Prep Your Yard for Winter

While brilliant fall foliage can make your home look more attractive, that doesn’t mean you can slack off on lawn maintenance with approaching cold weather. Keep winter damage at bay by preparing your yard to emerge next year better than it is now!
  1. Test Your Soil
  2. Mulch
  3. Reseed Your Lawn
  4. Prune
  5. Plant

1) Test Your Soil

Fall is a good time to apply grass seed, but before you do that, the soil should be tested to determine pH and nutrient availability,  Deficiencies need to be corrected or you’re just wasting time and money reseeding. You can have a landscape professional test the soil, or you can send it in for a small fee.

2) Mulch

Before you add new mulch in preparation for colder weather, turn the existing mulch. Take a sturdy rake and fluff and turn to give flower beds a fresh look and cut down the need for more, fresh mulch. When you add new mulch keep the pile around two to three inches thick. Mulching will protect your plant roots from a freeze.

3) Reseed Your Lawn

Once the soil is tested and deficiencies are corrected, it’s time to aerate and seed the parts of your lawn that are stressed from the summer heat or damaged from foot traffic. It depends on the condition of the lawn, but you typically need about three pounds for every 1,000 square feet of lawn. (If you’re overwhelmed by the steps involved in lawn maintenance, consider synthetic turf instead.)

4) Prune

Trees and shrubs typically need a heavy pruning before winter arrives. Some need it to help prevent damage from freezing temperatures and some just to control size for next spring,” says Kane. Just don’t prune certain flowering plants like hydrangeas, lilacs, and viburnum, because it could spoil the spring bloom.

5) Plant

While many people think of Spring as the growing season, Fall is a great time to plant. See what plants need to be divided or re-spaced (especially perennials) and what areas of the landscape need to be filled in to look even better the next year.
